In the first five weeks of this year 364,855 cases of infection have been reported, the Health Ministry said, four times more than dengue cases in the same period of 2023. The rapid spread of dengue has caused 40 confirmed deaths, the ministry said, and a further 265 are being investigated. The Health Ministry has set up an emergency center to coordinate operations against dengue across Brazil. Dengue fever symptoms include a high fever, headache, vomiting, muscle and joint pains, and an itching skin rash.

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Rio de Janeiro has declared a public health emergency because of an outbreak of mosquito-borne dengue fever, the city said in its official gazette on Monday, just days before Carnival celebrations kick off across Brazil. Since the beginning of 2024, the municipality has registered more than 10,000 dengue cases. On Monday, the Brazilian air force set up a 60-bed field hospital in the Federal District in Ceilandia that was due to begin treating patients. In such cases, dengue can be fatal. In March 2023, Brazil approved a vaccine against dengue and became the first country in the world to offer a dengue vaccine through the public health system, according to the health ministry.

Austria is aiming to buy about four aircrafts and is negotiating with the Netherlands on a potential joint order, Tanner told a news conference. Aside from an order for 19 C-390 aircrafts from the Brazilian Air Force, Portugal has ordered five and Hungary has requested two. Analysts at JPMorgan calculated that including the prospective orders from Austria and The Netherlands, the aircraft's potential lifetime sales stand at 35 units, 28 of which are still to be delivered. Shares in Embraer rose 2.85% in early trading on the Brazilian stock exchange, outperforming the Bovespa stock index (.BVSP), which rose 0.8%.

SAO PAULO, Sept 16 (Reuters) - Fourteen people on a small jet died when the plane crashed in Brazil's northern Amazonas state on Saturday, the state's governor said. The accident took place in the Barcelos province, some 400 km (248 miles) from the state capital, Manaus. The training will begin after the pilots receive English language training next month, Pentagon spokesman Brigadier General Pat Ryder said. Several pilots and dozens of aircraft maintenance crew will take the training, Ryder added. Denmark has begun training eight Ukrainian pilots in flying F-16s. U.S. President Joe Biden endorsed training programs for Ukrainian pilots on F-16s in May.

The move could irritate Beijing, which repeatedly demanded the United States - Taiwan's most important arms supplier - halt the sale of weapons to the island. The $500 million is the maximum potential value of the contract and the actual dollar value will be lower, the Pentagon said. The United States unveiled a Taiwan weapons aid package worth up to $345 million late last month.

RIO DE JANEIRO, April 11 (Reuters) - Brazil is analyzing the option of expanding an order for Swedish manufacturer Saab's (SAABb.ST) Gripen fighter jets, though the number of additional aircraft which could be bought has yet to be determined, Defense Minister Jose Mucio told Reuters Tuesday. In 2014, Brazil signed a deal to purchase 36 Gripen fighter jets for its Air Force with the goal of modernizing its fleet. The first aircraft have already been delivered to Brazil and the remainder are expected to be delivered by 2027. The negotiations would involve forgoing some equipment and ammunition in exchange for "credit" toward the purchase of the four additional jets. Demand is great enough that Brazil could place a second order for around 30 more jets, the source said.
